It usually goes the same way. The car fails a WOF. The repair is more than the car is worth, so you put it off. The rego lapses because there is no point paying it. Then the battery dies, the tyres go flat, and now you have got a dead car parked up that you cannot legally drive and cannot be bothered dealing with.
Sound familiar? You are not alone. Half the cars we pick up have been sitting for months, sometimes years, because people assume getting rid of an unregistered, no-WOF car is a hassle. It is not. Here is exactly how it works.
Can you even sell a car with no WOF or rego?
Yes. One hundred percent legal in New Zealand.
Here is the thing a lot of people get wrong: a WOF and rego are needed to drive a car on the road, not to sell it. You do not need to fix it, get a new warrant, or relicense it before you sell. Old, rusted, deregistered, non-running, flood-damaged, accident-damaged, does not matter. It can still be sold and recycled.
The only rule that really matters is that you cannot drive it on public roads without a current WOF and rego. Which is exactly why most people in this situation go with a removal service, because we bring the truck to you and tow it away. No driving it anywhere, no organising a trailer, no stress.
Unregistered versus deregistered, and why it matters
Quick clarification, because these two get mixed up.
An unregistered car is one whose licence (the rego) has simply expired. It is still in the NZTA system, it has just lapsed. This is the most common one, and it is easy to deal with.
A deregistered car has been fully removed from the register, either because NZTA cancelled it after it sat unlicensed too long, or the owner cancelled it themselves. Passenger vehicles can only stay unlicensed for around 12 months before NZTA cancels the registration, so if yours has been parked up for years, it may well be deregistered by now.
Either way, the good news is the same: both can still be sold and scrapped. You do not need to do anything to sort the registration status first. We handle that side.
The paperwork, and who actually does it
This is the part people dread, and it is genuinely the easy bit when you go through a removal service.
When we buy your car, NZTA really only needs two things to happen: your name comes off the vehicle (a notice of disposal), and the vehicle is recorded as changing hands or being scrapped. When our driver turns up to collect the car, they bring the disposal paperwork with them. You sign it with your ID, we pay you, and we tow it. Your name is off the car. Done.
You do not have to visit an AA, log into a government website, or fill in forms yourself. We take care of the NZTA side as part of the pickup.
A couple of honest things worth knowing:
If the car still has some paid rego time left on it, you might be owed a small partial refund from NZTA once the disposal is filed. Worth checking.
And getting your name off the car matters for another reason: it stops you being liable for anything that happens with the vehicle after it is gone, including any fines that come from it sitting registered in your name. That is a good reason not to leave it half-dealt-with.
What you will need on the day
Nothing complicated. Just have this sorted before the truck arrives:
- Photo ID (driver licence is fine)
- Proof you own the car, so we can legally take it off your hands
- The keys if you have got them, though it is not a dealbreaker if the car is truly dead
That is about it. Be straight with us about the car’s condition when you get your quote, and the price we quote is the price you get.
Does no WOF or rego lower what you get?
For a removal or wrecker sale, generally no. We are buying the car for its parts and metal, not to drive it, so whether it has a current warrant makes little difference to us. That is very different from a private sale, where most buyers will not touch a car without a WOF and you will get lowballed or ignored.
So if your car is dead, damaged, or long past its road life, a removal service is nearly always the better deal than trying to flog it on Marketplace to tyre kickers who never show up.
