New Zealand gets its share of wild weather, and every big flood or storm leaves a trail of soggy cars behind it. Maybe yours went through a flood. Maybe the insurer wrote it off and you kept the wreck. Maybe it has been sitting since the last big downpour, quietly corroding, and you are not sure if it is worth anything or if you are even allowed to sell it.
Good questions, and the answers are more straightforward than most people think. Here is how selling a flood-damaged or written-off car actually works in NZ.
First, a warning worth taking seriously
Do not try to fix up a flood-damaged car and put it back on the road, and be very wary of anyone selling you one.
Water damage is sneaky. Even if a car looks fine after it dries out, water gets into the electrical system and the safety components and starts corroding them from the inside. Faults can take weeks or months to show up. NZTA strongly discourages people from repairing, driving, or on-selling water-damaged vehicles for exactly this reason. Airbags, ABS, and wiring can all fail down the track.
So if your car has been through a flood, the safest and smartest move is usually not to patch it up. It is to sell it to be recycled or broken down for parts, properly and honestly.
Who actually owns the car? Check this first
This is the one thing that trips people up, so sort it before anything else.
If your car was insured and the insurer wrote it off, in most cases the insurance company takes ownership once they pay out your claim. If they own it, you cannot sell it, they dispose of it through their own salvage process. So check your settlement.
But there are two common situations where selling it is entirely down to you:
If you kept the salvage (some settlements let you keep the wreck for a reduced payout), then you own it and you can sell it.
If the car was not insured, or the damage never went through a claim, then it is yours to deal with, and selling it to a removal or salvage service is often the easiest option.
So before you do anything, confirm you are the one who legally owns it. If you kept the salvage, it is worth getting written confirmation from your insurer that you are free to sell.
What happens on the register
When an insurer writes off a car for water or flood damage, they deregister it and it gets flagged on NZTA’s Motor Vehicle Register, usually with a water-damage marker. That flag stays with the car.
That is not a problem for you when you are selling it to be recycled or wrecked. It just means the car is recorded for what it is, which is the honest and correct outcome. We handle the disposal side of that when we take it.
Is a flood-damaged or written-off car worth anything?
Yes, and often more than people expect.
A written-off car is not a worthless car. An insurance write-off simply means it was uneconomic to repair compared to what it was worth, not that it has no value. The car is still full of metal, and often full of good parts that are not affected by the water. Engines, gearboxes, panels, wheels and plenty of components can still be salvaged and reused, and the metal itself always has scrap value.
So a flood-damaged ute or a written-off SUV can still put a fair bit of cash in your hand. What it is worth comes down to the same things as any car: the make and model, how much good metal and salvageable parts are in it, and the market at the time.
Just be honest about it
The single most important thing when selling a damaged car: tell us exactly what happened to it.
Was it flood or water damage, fire, or an accident? Did an insurer write it off, and did you keep the salvage? The more honest you are about the car’s history and condition, the more accurate the quote, and the more likely the number we give you is the number you get. There are no points lost for a car being damaged, it is literally what we deal in. Trying to hide it just makes the process messier for everyone.
How to sell it, the easy way
If you have got a flood-damaged or written-off car:
- Confirm you own it (check your insurance settlement if it was a claim)
- Do not try to repair it for the road
- Get in touch with the details and a few photos, and be upfront about the damage and write-off status
- We give you a quote, come to you, tow it for free, pay you cash, and handle the disposal paperwork
You do not need to get it running or moving. Flooded, dead, written-off, does not matter, we bring the truck to you.
The short version
A flood-damaged or written-off car is not worthless and it is not un-sellable. As long as you own it, you can sell it, and it is genuinely the responsible thing to do rather than trying to fix it or on-sell it to someone who does not know its history. It still holds real value in its parts and metal.
